LIFTING THE GRASS SKIRT! The Story Behind OCEANIC ARTS: The Godfathers of TIKI! (with author, JORDAN REICHEK)
Time: Saturday, May 6th at 4pm
One Hour Symposium with a complimentary cocktail.
At the end of 2021, the legendary Oceanic Arts business closed its doors, after decades of creating, supplying and inspiring Tiki culture across the world. The grieving that happened within the Tiki community was profound, however little did anyone know that a man named Jordan Reichek had been quietly working with Oceanic Arts’ Bob Van Oosting and LeRoy Schmaltz to create a book, a send-off party and an auction so epic that people will be talking about it for the rest of their lives.
Join author and Peekaboo Gallery owner, Jordan Reichek, as he shares details of the unforgettable ALOHA, OA! celebration of famed Polynesian supplier, OCEANIC ARTS. Jordan will explain the process, challenges and incredible discoveries of "putting the cake topper" on sixty-five years of Oceanic Arts’ history. He’ll take us on a behind-the-scenes tour of how he pulled this all together together during Covid, while living every Tiki nerd's fantasy of getting to explore all the nooks and crannies of the infamous Oceanic Arts warehouse in Whittier, California. You’ll get to hear what it was like to work with Bob and LeRoy to help them to tell their story, including the adventures of finding many long-lost, Indiana Jones-worthy artifacts! Jordan will keep you entertained with expanded anecdotes of historic material, which was just touched upon in his book, OCEANIC ARTS: The Godfathers of TIKI. Discussion and Q&A to follow.
