New England Tiki-Kevin Quigley (Friday May 1st 12:30)
Kevin Quigley presents NEW ENGLAND TIKI, a symposium on the unusual Tiki history of a nautical region whose history is more North Atlantic than South Pacific. New England's history with Tiki winds through traditional tropical bars and revival waystations, as well as a fascinating regional tradition of Asian-American restaurants forging a unique new path. It's a tale of pilfering beachcombers, enterprising women, and one of the country's last grand Tiki temples left standing.
Bio
Kevin didn't know Tiki was missing from his life when he fell under its spell in the late 2010s. Since then, he has created his own home bar called The Mystery Cove (and its secret Sea Stories Lounge), adopted the moniker Captain Swizzles, and written the Arcadia Press book, NEW ENGLAND TIKI (part of their regional Tiki series). A writer, designer, and pop culture historian, Kevin divides his time between penning novels, creating graphic art, and co-hosting the Disney and pop culture podcast, The Thirty20Eight. You can find him midweek at Wusong Road in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he and other denizens of the New England Tiki Society meet for Wusong Wednesday, where the Jet Pilots flow freely.
